TMJ/TMD Treatment
TMJ (temporomandibular joint) disorder, also known as TMD (temporomandibular disorder), is a condition that affects the jaw joint and muscles that control jaw movement. Symptoms of TMD include pain or discomfort in the jaw joint, facial pain, difficulty opening or closing the mouth, and a clicking or popping sound when the jaw moves. TMD can be caused by a variety of factors, including injury, arthritis, teeth grinding, and stress.
Treatment for TMD typically begins with conservative measures such as over-the-counter pain medication, ice packs, and jaw exercises. In some cases, a bite guard or splint may be used to help align the jaw and reduce stress on the joint.
Physical therapy can also be helpful in improving jaw function and reducing pain. In severe cases, surgery may be needed to repair or replace the jaw joint.
Other alternative treatments such as biofeedback, stress management, and relaxation techniques can also be used to help alleviate symptoms of TMD.
It’s important to consult with a dental professional or jaw specialist for an accurate diagnosis and proper treatment plan. It’s also important to note that self-diagnosis and self-treatment can worsen the condition and may lead to permanent damage.
