What Are Braces?
Braces are orthodontic devices used to align and
straighten teeth, correct bite issues, and
improve overall dental health. They work by
applying continuous pressure over time,
gradually moving teeth into their proper
positions. Braces can address a variety of
dental concerns, including overcrowding, gaps
between teeth, overbites, underbites, and
crossbites.
How Do Braces Work?
Braces consist of several components that work together to move your teeth:
- Brackets: Small square pieces attached to the front of each tooth. Brackets can be made of metal, ceramic, or other materials.
- Archwires: Thin metal wires that connect the brackets. The archwire is adjusted periodically to apply pressure and guide the teeth into place.
- Bands: Elastic bands are used in some cases to connect the brackets to the archwire, providing additional force to move the teeth.
- Spacers: Small rubber bands placed between teeth before getting braces to create space for the bands.
Types of Braces
Today, there are several types of braces available to suit different needs and preferences:
The most common type, metal braces
are made of high-grade stainless
steel. They are highly effective and
often the most affordable option.
Similar to metal braces but with
brackets made of clear or
tooth-colored ceramic. They are less
noticeable but more fragile than
metal braces.
These braces are placed on the back
side of the teeth, making them
virtually invisible from the front.
However, they can be more
challenging to clean and adjust.
A popular alternative to traditional
braces, clear aligners are removable
trays that gradually shift your
teeth. They are nearly invisible and
offer more flexibility, though they
may not be suitable for all cases.
