Oral Cancer Screening
Oral cancer screening is a process of examining the mouth, including the lips, tongue, gums, and other oral tissues, to look for signs of cancer or precancerous conditions.
During an oral cancer screening, the dentist or dental hygienist will visually inspect the mouth, including the cheeks, gums, tongue, roof of the mouth, and the back of the throat. They will also feel for any lumps or abnormalities in the tissue.
The dentist or dental hygienist may also use a special light or dye to help detect abnormal tissue. If they find anything suspicious, they may take a biopsy, which involves removing a small sample of the tissue for further examination.
Oral cancer screenings are usually done during regular dental check-ups, but some dental practices may offer them as a separate service. It’s important to note that oral cancer screenings are not a substitute for regular medical check-ups and screenings.
Risk factors for oral cancer include tobacco use, excessive alcohol consumption, exposure to UV radiation from the sun, a diet low in fruits and vegetables, and certain types of HPV (Human Papillomavirus) infection. Early detection and treatment of oral cancer can lead to a better outcome.
