What Are Dental X-Rays Per Film?

Dental X-rays per film are a type of X-ray that captures detailed images of your teeth and surrounding structures on a per-film basis. Unlike panoramic X-rays, which provide a broad view of your entire mouth, X-rays per film focus on specific sections of your mouth, such as individual teeth or small groups of teeth. These X-rays are typically used to detect problems that aren’t visible during a routine dental examination.

X-Rays Per Film Procedure

Dental X-rays specifically focused on the needs of older adults.

Standard dental X-rays to check for cavities, bone loss, and other issues.

How Are X-Rays Per Film Taken?

The process of taking dental X-rays per film is quick and straightforward:

  1. Preparation: Your dentist or dental assistant will place a lead apron over your chest and, if necessary, a thyroid collar to protect you from radiation exposure.

  2. Positioning: A small film or digital sensor will be placed inside your mouth, close to the area being examined. You’ll be asked to bite down on a small tab to keep the film in place.

  3. Taking the X-Ray: The X-ray machine is positioned outside your mouth, and a brief burst of radiation is used to capture the image on the film or digital sensor.

  4. Review: The X-ray image is developed and reviewed by your dentist to diagnose any issues.

Are Dental X-Rays Safe?

Dental X-rays are considered safe and involve very low levels of radiation exposure. Advances in technology, including digital X-rays, have further reduced the amount of radiation required. Your dentist will take care to minimize exposure and only recommend X-rays when necessary for accurate diagnosis and treatment planning.

Benefits of X-Rays Per Film

Dental X-rays per film offer several important benefits:

  1. Early Detection: X-rays can identify issues like cavities, infections, or bone loss in their early stages, allowing for prompt treatment.
  2. Accurate Diagnosis: Detailed images provide your dentist with essential information to make accurate diagnoses and develop effective treatment plans.
  3. Targeted Treatment: By focusing on specific areas of the mouth, X-rays per film enable precise treatment, whether for filling a cavity, performing a root canal, or planning orthodontic work.
