What is Prophylaxis?

Prophylaxis, or teeth cleaning, is a preventive dental procedure designed to remove plaque, tartar, and stains from your teeth. Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that forms on your teeth, and if not removed, it can harden into tartar, leading to gum disease and tooth decay. Regular cleaning helps keep your teeth and gums healthy, preventing these issues before they start.

The Different Levels of Teeth Cleaning

Depending on the level of plaque and tartar buildup, your dentist may recommend one of three levels of cleaning:
Ideal for individuals with minimal plaque buildup. This routine cleaning helps maintain oral health and is typically recommended every six months.
For patients with moderate plaque and tartar accumulation. This cleaning is more thorough and may be recommended more frequently if you’re prone to buildup.
This intensive cleaning is necessary for those with significant tartar buildup, especially below the gum line. Deep scaling is crucial in preventing gum disease and other serious dental issues.

Why Regular Prophylaxis is Important

Regular teeth cleaning is vital for preventing common dental problems such as cavities, gum disease, and bad breath. By removing plaque and tartar, your dentist helps you avoid these issues, keeping your smile bright and healthy. Additionally, regular cleanings allow your dentist to catch potential problems early, saving you time, money, and discomfort in the long run.
